To be sad about missing a party

To cry from falling and pain

To look up into faces

To reach out and hug only legs

When sadness itself was so easy

When we all knew sorrow’s name

Oh, to just be a child

To just be a child again

When cause lead itself to effect

When the whole open world was ahead

When sorrow ne’er came uninvited —

From just getting out of our bed

The reasons we wanted were present

The questions we needed were new

The complexities deemed an adventure

All else we accepted as true

To be sad about missing a party

Rather than wondering why

To cry from falling and pain

Or, really, just even to cry

When sadness itself was so easy

When we all knew sorrow’s name

Oh, to just be a child

And to cry like a child again
